The project examines the significance of family formation for differences in the working lives of foreign-born and native-born women and men. Previous research indicates that foreign-born women often hold a weak position in the labour market, and that women’s income development is generally negatively affected by family formation. We compare the effects of family formation in groups with backgrounds from different parts of the world and study how these relate to factors linked to the country of origin, age at immigration, and time spent in Sweden. By linking background information to multiple generations, we also increase the knowledge about the transmission of cultural norms and how this is affected by the labour market position of older generations.
